Final 2017 Work Party October 28

We have rescheduled last week’s rained out work party to October 28. We will be concentrating on road and trail work between Barlow Pass and Happs Hill – most notably between the clayslide and Weden House. There are several fallen trees to remove and much trimming of the new growth trees and bushes along the roadway.

We will meet at the Barlow Pass gate at 8:30 AM and head in; we will not plan to use the new access road or venture into the townsite on this day. If you arrive after 8:30, you’ll find us along the roadway somewhere beyond the Barlow Pass gate. We’ll work until early afternoon.

There are also loose plans to do some end of season work at the townsite November 4th; if interested in participating then, contact us for details as found on the “Contact” page above.

Also note the Winter Social has been scheduled for February 3 at 5:30 PM at Jenning’s Barn in Marysville. More details to come.

October 21 Work Party POSTPONED

We have chosen to postpone the Oct 21 Work Party due to forecasted heavy rain showers and high winds. The new access road could suffer damage and using the log crossing at high water is not advised.

Stay tuned for future updates!

October 21 Work Party Scheduled

Our final 2017 work party will be Saturday October 21. Work parties are always the 3rd Saturday of the month from June to October.

We will meet at the new access road gate, 1 mile past Barlow Pass, with plan to begin the drive in at 9:00 AM. This will relieve congestion at Barlow and simplify the meet and entrance logistics.

We will be removing the MCPA bulletin board from the clay slide for winter storage, brushing (work needing done between twin bridges and the new access road), acting as hosts in the townsite, possibly doing some layout work on the MCPA lot for our interpretive structure, and any other tasks to ready the area for winter.

There will be plenty of other work needing done if you want to join us. Contact us as seen on the Contact page if you have any questions.

We’ll work to at least 1:00 PM and may have a group of persons stay later if there is still work to be done.

Come prepared for the weather – it could be 75 degrees….or it could be snowing.

September 16, 2017 Work Party Scheduled

Our next 2017 work party will be Saturday September 16. Work parties are always the 3rd Saturday of the month from June to October.

Starting this month we will meet at the new access road gate, 1 mile past Barlow Pass, with plan to begin the drive in at 9:00 AM. This will relieve congestion at Barlow and simplify the meet and entrance logistics. Given one of us will pick up a key at Verlot at 8:00, we cal likely begin allowing persons to drive in by about 8:30. We’ll plan to all be inside the gate and have the gate locked by 9:00.

Our objectives will be brushing, possibly re-arranging some timbers in the timber pile to aid in circulation, and acting as hosts in the townsite.

There will also be plenty of other work needing done if you want to join us. Contact us as seen on the Contact page if you have any questions.

We’ll work to at least 1:00 PM and may have a group of persons stay later if there is still work to be done.

August 19 2017 Work Party Scheduled

Our 3nd 2017 work party will be Saturday August 19. Work parties are always the 3rd Saturday of the month from June to October.

In August we will meet as usual at the Barlow Pass gate at 9:00 – from there we will travel to the new access road and then into the townsite. Our main objective will be to complete the relocation of the timber pile which is downhill from the United Concentrator site; it was washed away when Glacier Creek jumped the bank late in 2015; we recovered the pile from the dry creek bed late 2016. We moved the majority of the pile in July but have a small number of smaller timbers that still need moved. These timbers are being located uphill to near the MCPA townsite lots where there will ultimately be used for building an interpretive structure and visitor information center.

There will also be plenty of other work needing done if you want to join us. Contact us as seen on the Contact page if you have any questions.

We’ll work to at least 2:00 PM and may have a group of persons stay later if there is still work to be done.

July 15 Work Party Scheduled

Our 2nd 2017 work party will be Saturday July 15. Work parties are always the 3rd saturday of the month from June to September.

In July we will meet as usual at the Barlow Pass gate at 9:00 – from there we will travel to the new access road and then into the townsite. Our main objective will be to relocate the timber pile which is currently scattered downhill from the United Concentrator site; it was washed away when Glacier Creek jumped the bank late in 2015; we recovered the pile from the dry creek bed late 2016.

We now need to relocate the pile up near Dumas Street to facilitate building an interpretive structure on the MCPA lots on Dumas Street. It will likely be a whole day job just to relocate the 50+ timbers weighing more than 5 tons in total. We will have mechanized transport equipment on site but can also use all the man power possible to most effectively complete this task. Please contact us to let us know you’ll be joining us to help with this project.

There will also be plenty of other work needing done if you want to join us.

Please RSVP to those listed on the MCPA “Contact Us” page so we have an idea who to wait for at Barlow.

June 17 Work Party Recap

Our June 17th work party was met with great attendance and great weather. We installed the bulletin board at the clay slide (3/4 mile in from Barlow Pass) then caravanned to the townsite on the new access road. There we did brushing of Dumas St and the turntable, secured the Forest Service Cabins, and did some ground cleanup and surveying at the MCPA lots on Dumas Street.

Some members worked from BLM maps to locate the corners of the former Trump (Drumpf) property; this is visible just over the Sunday Creek foot bridge; turn right just after crossing the creek, before you reach the powerhouse.

David Cameron educated members and visitors with his knowledge and period photographs. A high school student from Bellevue did some filming for a journalism project.

Lunch Break June 2017

June 17 Work Party Scheduled

The MCPA will have it’s first 2017 monthly work party on June 17. We will meet at the gate at Barlow Pass at 9:00 AM. There we will correct any trail issues up to twin bridges and re-install our bulletin board. We will then proceed to the new access gate and drive into Monte, again correcting road issues as we encounter them.

We will do anyneeded cleanup and maintenance in the townsite, then head to the MCPA lots (on Dumas Street) to begin assessment of the site for our interpretive plans. We will be surveying, brushing the site and marking borders.

MCPA members and the public are welcome and encouraged to attend the work party. You can choose whatever type of work you are suited for – trail building, brush cutting, log & rock moving, etc. Bring whatever implements you feel appropriate. If you are a member with a signed road waiver you can drive into the work location; others can ride in member vehicles, room permitting. We typically work from 9:00 until 12 or 1, then have a group lunch and then disperse.

Annual Meeting and Potluck Lunch June 3 Noon at Verlot

We hope everyone had a nice spring.

We are excited to begin our new year with the Annual Meeting, coming up on June 3rd at the Verlot Service Center. As usual, we will have a nice potluck lunch at noon, prior to beginning our annual meeting. We have lots to discuss with members at this meeting so we hope everyone can attend. Please remember, we are now on a calendar year with our membership, January to December. Please bring your membership dues to this meeting. We will discuss plans for our first work party of the year at the Annual Meeting.

As with previous years, all our work parties will be on the third Saturday of each month, beginning in June. Those dates are: June 17, July 15, August 19, September 16, and October 21. Please check our website, www.mcpa.us for updates or last minute changes for these work parties in case of severe weather or road closures.

This year, we plan to begin work on our new interpretive site. Since this will be a one-time experience (probably spread between 2 years) if you would like to be a part of history and help with this endeavor, please sign up at the Annual Meeting or email me with your interest. At the Annual Meeting, we will outline the options we have discussed for designing the interpretive
site and hope to start the project at the first or second work party.

As mentioned at the February Winter Social, and if you were unable to attend, we welcome your feedback on how you think the MCPA should respond to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) management plan for Monte Cristo. So we will also have this on our agenda for the Annual Meeting. I also want to discuss possible plans to continue our own Town Site Host Program at this meeting. This program has, in the past, been the only deterrence against vandalism in the area and the public has tremendous respect for what we are doing.
